Rockwood ranger program

Short Story

Protecting the rhino at Rockwood is of utmost importance. We can’t do it with fences and cameras alone – we need people who are passionate about protecting wildlife.

The Ranger Program at Rockwood is made up of handpicked men and women, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, who receive the training and skills to protect our rhino in the bush from those who would do them harm. Our rangers develop a close bond with the animals and are dedicated to rhino conservation.

Story

Rangers on horseback risk their own lives every day to protect the lives of the Rhino herds at Rockwood. We’ve had NO poachings in over 5 years!

The ranger program at Rockwood does more than just employing security guards. We create opportunities, we change the lives of families and local communities by giving people access to a better future.

In someway these proud rangers have the Rhino to thank for the life and future they have - this creates a strong bond between them and the animals they care for.

The Ranger program at Rockwood includes comprehensive wildlife and game ranger training as well as horsemanship and weapons training.

A Rockwood Ranger graduate is a capable and proud game ranger with a mission and passion to protect the Rhino for future generations.

Rockwood ranger taking care of horse Rockwood is a result of one man’s passion to save the Rhino. He’s done an amazing job up to now and the blueprint for success has been created.

We Need Your Help to scale this up and roll it out to protect more of these amazing animals.
1. You can be a part of this amazing success story by Sponsoring a Ranger’s Training
2. To keep a ranger on his horse and in his Job is vital for the protection of the Rhino herds.
3. You can be directly responsible for the protection of rhino herds in Africa by contributing to the cost of keeping a ranger on his horse.

The cost of training, caring for, and deploying rangers are significant, but if we share it up and everyone contributes a little bit we can do this!

Rockwood - Benefit and challenges of private Rhino conservation in Africa
More than half of the total global Rhino population is in private ownership on private game reserves and farms. Private reserves and farms have an exponentially higher success rate in protecting the Rhino.

Some of the largest national parks in South Africa lost more than 50% of their Rhino herds to poaching during the last decade while private reserves like Rockwood grow their herds by 15% each year and have ZERO poaching incidents.

Until the poaching of Rhino can be stopped - Private Rhino conservation and farming is the only safe way to protect these majestic animals from extinction.

Rhino herds can be maintained and grown in order to restock the national parks when poaching is brought under control.

Private reserves and farms do not benefit from the money raised by regular Rhino charities and they get ZERO income from their animals - although it costs a fortune to keep them.
Security - feeding - health and wellbeing - infrastructure - etc.

Rockwood Conservation is addressing this challenge.

We need your help to sustain the amazing growth and results that we’ve managed to achieve up to now.
We will also be supporting private Rhino conservation programs to ensure that they achieve the same results.

The Northern Cape in South Africa is an area of extremes. Summer temperatures reach well over 40degrees with harsh sunshine while winter nights can reach -10 and below. Being out in the bush for extended periods in these conditions is not a walk in the park.

To endure these conditions our rangers have to be kitted with quality kit including hats, boots, blankets, sunscreen, etc. When they are safe and comfortable, our rhinos are safe.

We ensure that our rangers always have fresh quality kit in order to provide the best possible protection for the Rhino herds at Rockwood
